Health Department Updates
A.
KCHD Exec. Dir. Isaacson provided an overview of the vital statistics of births
and deaths in Kane County. He stated that vital records are obtained by the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and are a representative of all
registered births and deaths in Kane County. He provided 2023 data of the
number of live births and general fertility rates of Kane County residents. There
were 5,494 births to Kane County residents in 2023. The general fertility rate
(GFR) in 2023 was 56.0 births per 1K women of ages fifteen to forty-four.
Isaacson stated that the conditions originating in the prenatal period include low
birth weight, pre-maturity, and complications of pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
In 2023, the infant mortality rate (IMR) was 7.1 infant deaths per 1K live births,
and a total of 3,755 Kane County resident deaths. Kane County resident deaths
have decreased significantly since year 2020 during the Covid pandemic. He
noted that cancer has been the leading cause of death in Kane County since
2008. Lung Cancer was the most common cancer type among Kane County
resident decedents. A total of 6.1 percent of accidental deaths occurred in Kane
County including motor cycle accidents, fall, unintentional poisoning or
overdose, and drowning. Isaacson highlighted that the first "Walk-and Roll" to
School Day was on Wednesday, October 8. The KCHD provided stipends to all
of the schools who participated. Kane County has traditionally been the county
with the highest participation in Illinois. He noted that this event is used to collect
data and raise awareness about students safely walking or riding bikes to
school. Lastly, Isaacson asked the Committee Members' for input on what other
data or statistics they would like to see included in a KCHD pamphlet. Much
discussion ensued.

2026 Committee Goals Review
Chairman Strathmann asked the Committees' for their input on Committee Goals for
2026. Committee Member Juby suggested to remove the "protect people from health
problems and health hazards" goal, and replace it by including a goal regarding the use
of data to drive healthy outcomes. She also suggested to change the goal "enforce
public health laws" to "educate the public on health laws." Discussion ensued.
