Resolution Approving a Public Art Sculpture Installation at Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve for the Centennial Celebration On June 8, 2025

WHEREAS, The Forest Preserve District of Kane County, Kane County, Illinois will be celebrating 100 years on June 8, 2025; and
WHEREAS, to honor a century of conservation efforts, the District plans a public celebration at Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn. The project will include restoration of 35-acres of agricultural land to its natural state, and the unveiling of the District's first-ever commissioned art installation, during the celebration; and
WHEREAS, the District followed a request for qualifications (RFQ) process to solicit artists, which drew five (5) submissions from qualified candidates; and
WHEREAS, a Centennial Art Committee comprised of five (5) District staff members, two (2) Forest Preserve Commissioners, the Kane Forest Preserve Foundation Board President, and two (2) artists from local arts organizations in Kane County reviewed the art submissions; and
WHEREAS, the sculpture "Guardians," by local artist Mike Baur stood out as the most compelling to the committee; and
WHEREAS, the final contract with the District will be negotiated with the artist for a total amount not to exceed One hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($150,000). This budgeted amount will cover the sculpture's design, materials, and installation. Additionally, the District will actively seek sponsorship to help fund the artwork.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Commissioners of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, Kane County, Illinois, shall approve the creation and installation of the "Guardians" art piece by Mike Baur for the Centennial Celebration, to be revealed on June 8th, 2025.
