title
AUTHORIZING THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT TO IMPLEMENT COST REDUCING CHANGES FOR KANE COUNTY'S EMPLOYEE MEDICAL PLAN
body
WHEREAS, the Kane County offers a comprehensive medical plan to its employees; and
WHEREAS, Kane County's medical plan is self-insured, managed by the Kane County Human Resources Department, and operated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois as carrier through an Administrative Services Agreement; and
WHEREAS, due to rising healthcare costs, the Kane County Board desires to evaluate cost saving adjustments to the medical plan design while keeping benefits substantially similar; and
WHEREAS, GLP-1 type drugs for weight loss purposes have resulted in substantial increase in health plan costs; and
WHEREAS, GLP-1 type drugs for weight loss purposes are now commercially available to consumers at reasonable cost to those who wish to continue the medications; and
WHEREAS, Kane County's Health Plan offers other means for employees seeking support with weight loss; and
WHEREAS, elimination of GLP-1 type drugs for weight loss purposes from the Plan's prescription drug coverage would result in significant cost savings and stabilize rates while maintaining substantially similar health plan benefits; and
WHEREAS, the Kane County Board feels it is in the best interests of the plan to reduce costs and stabilize rates.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Kane County Board that the Human Resources Department is authorized to work with the County's Health Insurance Broker and Blue Cross Blue Shield to eliminate coverage for GLP-1 type drugs for weight loss purposes under the Plan's prescription drug coverage effective with the 2027 plan year.
Passed by the Kane County Board on July 14, 2026.
