Authorizing the Renewal of the GrayKey Digital Forensics License by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office

WHEREAS, the use of mobile devices has become prevalent in our current society, and the related advances in encryption of these devices has provided additional challenges for law enforcement agencies when conducting investigations that rely on accessing information from such devices; and
WHEREAS, GrayKey by Magnet Forensics of Atlanta, GA, is one of only two programs available to law enforcement for accessing devices to obtain needed information for use in investigations; and
WHEREAS, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office has been utilizing the GrayKey Forensics program since 2018 to support successful investigations of its own and of various law enforcement agencies around Kane County that need device access, including close to 200 cases over a twelve-month period; and
WHEREAS, the Sheriff’s Office must renew the GrayKey program license annually, and the cost of the 2026 renewal is Thirty-Seven Thousand Three Hundred Seventy Dollars and No 100s ($37,370.00), which was included in the FY 2026 budget and will not draw on reserves.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kane County Board authorizes the Kane County Sheriff’s Office to renew its license for the use of GrayKey by Magnet Forensics, LLC, of Atlanta, Georgia, at the rate not to exceed Thirty-Seven Thousand Three Hundred Seventy Dollars and No 100s ($37,370.00) to continue to enable investigatory access to mobile devices.
